Solar Energy Power Plant

Bradley Said:

From where can i get the specifications regarding solar energy based power plant?

We Answered:

EDIT: "bs" stands for british standards. You will find your specification here: http://www.bsigroup.com/upload/Standards…

There are at least 5 different types of solar powered commercial thermal power generation plants. These would include:

Solar power tower, using heliostats as a heat source for a convention steam generation facility
Solar parabolic concentrators (a variation uses flat concentrators)
Solar parabolic dish concentrators with stirling engines
Solar chimneys (sometimes also called solar towers or power towers but use wind generation)
Solar ponds

All of these have some variations. To some extent wind generation is also a solar based technology and in addition to the solar chimney above there are stationary and tethered wind generation designs. OTEC may be considered a deep ocean variation of the solar pond concept. Of course there are commercial photovoltaic power facilities.

Is it possible to build a solar power plant using old CDs?

We Answered:

Yes you can, but then the fact that the CD's are circular will waste reflecting area unless you cut square each CD and arrange them in the VW roof. By the way, the use of the VW's roof is because its shape is almost a perfect parabola and you can concentrate the sun rays in its focus. You may get the heating capacity per square feet of CD by building a prototype of this condenser and expose to solar radiation, measure the temperature and time it takes the water to boil, and rise the steam to superheat. You may use an enthalpy diff. such as to return saturated steam to the boiler to preheat the incoming water make-up. With the enthalpy diff value you will get BTU/H-Ft2, the rest is to apply this result to the design of the turbine, that depends of what do you want it to drive.

Bill Said:

What are similarities in the way the solar cells and a nuclear power plant produce energy?

We Answered:

Both have photoelectric effect occurring in its process

EDIT: Kyle, the question was 'similarities'. Obviously this is an minor, insignificant, and downright superfulous similarity but does occur in both processes. I answered the question as written without interjecting what I thought the asker was meaning to ask.

Antonio Said:

what is the source of energy used by the solar power plant (photovoltaic cells method) to operate?

We Answered:

I would guess the sun would be the energy in SOLAR powered anything. Solar = sun

Martha Said:

How expensive is solar energy to produce?

We Answered:

You do not produce solar energy; it is free from the sun. However it can be converted to electricity using solar panels. If you check a picture of a satellite or the space station in orbit, you will see large solar panels to produce electricity to run the machines.
One environmental problem could be the disposal of old and derelict panels.

I came accross a new, proven and tested home made wind power system and solar power system which eliminates our electricity bills. It was written by a Renewable energy enthusiasts Michael Harvey the diy called Earth4energy. You can get your copy to save energy and help environment while eliminating your power bills.
