Construction Industry Cost

Cheryl Said:

sustainability in the construction industry?

We Answered:

a PROPERLY PLANNED sustainable (LEED certified) building will not cost anymore to construct & operate than a conventional one. It may even cost less.

It is being done everyday.

Hire a qualified architect to lead the project.

Louis Said:

In the Construction industry what percent of the labor cost actually goes to the laborers?

We Answered:

Construction cost is a result of :

Labor (at whatever the competitive rate is for the skill and the area)
+ Materials (bricks, nails, lumber, sandpaper, paint, drywall &c.)
+ Overhead (equipment, fuel, taxes, real estate, phone, lights, insurance, bad debts, &c.)
+ Profit margin (depends on the contractors expectations and the competitive nature of the market. )

Stella Said:

What is best, most cost productive form of advertising?

We Answered:

Go to where your target market 'gathers'. Check out the industry publications and send them a press release that has useful information in it for readers - not a plug for your business. Suggest to them that you write a regular column for them. Then you can negotiate a very favourable deal for advertising with them and people will recognise you as the person who writes a useful column. (I do this with one of our target markets and it works well.)

Know who your ideal customer is and target them directly. Research them thoroughly before you do so that you can talk to them in a way that shows you know something about them. For example, if your target is companies employing between 10 and 50 people in the South East of England, you can do a lot of research on the web that will find you exactly those companies. Find the names of the people to approach.

Careful targeting will give you the best return for your marketing spend.

Is there anything you can do linking up with CITB, the Construction Industry Training Board?

Good luck!

Mildred Said:

What is industry standard fee in residential construction for contract superintendant work?

We Answered:

You need to look at other factors when deciding the percentage. For instance, what is the time period to complete the job. Is it one year, do you expect him to be on your job 40 hours per week. Then you better make your percentage high enough to pay him his entire salary for that time period(year, 3 months, whatever)

We own a commercial electrical company and I know that most general contractors throw 10-15% on top of our costs and other subcontractor costs to help cover their pay.
