Eugene Said:

can energy storage devices like flywheels capture/store energy from another machines ie) a treadmill?

We Answered:

Yes. Although a flywheel will eventually slow down due to friction.

Try looking up bionx - they make an electric motor / generator kit for bicycles, in Montreal.

When you pedal, apply the brakes, or coast downhill, you can recharge the battery, depending on how it's set.

It's called regenerative braking.

Warren Said:

What does chemical engineering have to do with alternative energy?

We Answered:

The one drawback to alternative energies like solar and wind is that they are not constant. There needs to be a way to store up excess energy for those times when the wind isn't blowing and/or the sun isn't shining.

The biggest task facing chemical engineers is creating large scale batteries to store the energy. Chemical engineers, as opposed to chemists, are specialists at taking chemical reactions and processes and scaling them up for industrial usage.

Leah Said:

Why Bioelectric cells are developed behind the curtain, while the world is looking for alternative energy?

We Answered:

All that is great and interesting... one could ask what happened to a lot of promising energy sources. Ever heard of ocean thermal conversion, developed by TRW in the late 70's... Excellent mid to high yield, needing only deep water close to a coastline... how abour direct tidal conversion, bobbing ducks and wave pressure types; the French power coastal towns with these and have done it for years.

The world abounds with energy.

Sadly, the old money is oil, coal and gas, and they have the economic and political stranglehold on the situation.
Hence oil-men in the white house.

What we really need to do is build an infrastructure for the 21st century, rather than stifling science to preserve the 19th century industrialist aristocracy.

It would take maybe ten years, but using everything in our arsenal the world could be all set up for a century of environmentally friendly technology.

Will it happen. I'm guessing only if the old money can own all the technology.

So much for the free hand of the market place... get's kind of slapped down by the monopolistic power struggle.

Justin Said:

What is the un-intended consquence with alternative energy vehicles?

We Answered:

Do you mean: "Will the world ever be perfect"? No. Alternative fueled cars will still break down and get flat tires.

Wheels used to fall off of covered wagons, and horses poop.

The chain used to come off of my bicycle on a regular basis.

There are always going to be issues. BUT...do you want to quit trying because you can't find a "perfect solution"?

Discuss It!
